Optoma UHZ50 Projector Review
The UHZ50 projector from Optoma is a great example of how the company has managed to create affordable product from high league (4k laser projectors) that don’t sacrifice quality. This Optoma UHZ50 was excellent in every area and can be used for a multitude of purposes.
We were impressed with the 4K pixel shifter’s ability to produce very detailed images. The out-of-the-box performance was good, and it could be further improved with deeper calibration. It also had satisfactory brightness, black levels and shadow detail that outperformed most of its competitors in the same category.
The Optoma UHZ50 also has a low input lag (!only 4 ms in 1080p!), which is great for gamers who want to enjoy their games and stream without any lag.
In addition, the Optoma OS – which is a heavily modified Android – has plenty of support from apps and Optoma’s own systems. Furthermore, its low input lag makes it an ideal choice for both movies and gaming while 3D support will allow you to maintain your 3D content for a few more years.
Optoma UHZ50 has a few downsides:
- It can’t support anything more than 4K@60Hz, so if you want to use 120Hz or 240Hz, you’ll be limited to 1080p resolution.
- Additionally, there are no HDMI 2.1 ports on the projector, and if you want to use both Optoma’s PureMotion and Enhanced Gaming features, you’ll need to switch between different HDMI ports. Also with Enhanced Gaming certain functions are turned off.
- Finally, the built-in audio system leaves much to be desired, so if you intend to install this in a home entertainment room, we recommend investing in a better audio solution.
The UHZ50, at first appearing as if it’s only meant for playing games, is actually a top-tier mixed use projector able to give outstanding results whether you’re watching movies or videogames.
Laser projectors increasingly more popular, and for good reasons: they offer better picture quality than traditional DLP projectors.

Optoma UHZ50: Reviews
Joe Keery ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
There is a big difference in projection quality between using an Elite Screens 100″ CineGrey3D screen and projecting onto a wall–you will get much better quality with the former. When combined with the UHZ50, it will look incredibly close to an OLED TV.
I chose a screen with an ALR coating to reject light reflection and maintain high contrast in brightly lit rooms. I strongly recommend that you get a similar screen when you make your purchase.
Dave Holland ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
If you’re looking for a great projector to play video games, this is it. However, streaming services and videos might look a bit washed out.
John Carell ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The UHZ50 projector is affordably priced and provides excellent value for money. Even when factoring in the cost of a good screen, it is still cheaper than buying an equivalent TV. I cannot think of any 100″ TVs that are under $3,000. And btw, don’t spend your time on internet forums with people who have nothing better to do than nitpick and deliberately try to make others feel bad about their choices…

If you’re looking for a Ready-to-use entertainment set up, then the Optoma UHZ50 is an excellent deal. You can take it out of the box and start watching right away. That being said, we would recommend pairing it with external speakers and a streaming device to enhance your experience.
The UHZ50 may not meet the criteria of being a class-leading projector, but it still projects a sharp and clean image. If you’re considering buying a 4K projector, this model should be on your list.
