History of ViewSonic Corporation

Company journey begins with a tiny distribution company that supplied computer peripherals to the US market. Keypoint Technology Corporation (ViewSonic from 1990) was founded in 1987 by James Chu, a citizen of the United States and a native of Taiwan.

ViewSonic is a widely known company that manufactures devices for visualization, such as projectors and monitors, as well as mobile devices like portable computers and wireless monitors. The ViewSonic story starts with a small distribution company supplying computer peripherals to the US market.

Viewsonic was established in 1990 by producing colorful computer monitors.

J. Chu wants their logo, which contains three iridescent amadin birds (or as they like to be called inside the company – The Finches), to showcase that the design technique is able to reflect nature’s colors authentically and vibrantly.

The name of the company, Viewsonic, is a combination of “View” and “Sonic”. This was done to allude to the fact that our images make sound.

As an interesting side note, in some Asian countries ViewSonic are known by the slang name “Three birds”.

In 1994, ViewSonic was successfully launched on European markets.

The European representative office of Vlondone opened two years later.

For nearly a decade, Viewsonic monitors were seen with the same high regard as devices from well-known brands such as Sony, Panasonic, and NEC.

In 1998, PC Magazine listed it as one of the most influential companies in the world.

In 1998, ViewSonic released two monitors from the Professional series that received a certificate of compliance with TCO ’99 standards.

In 2000, the ViewSonic company bought out the monitor division of Nokia Display Products. The Finnish company then pursued a policy of switching to exclusively mobile phones and one year later, stopped producing monitors under the Nokia brand.

Also in 2000, the company partnered with AT&T to release a line of web-connected devices that could be used with any operating system. These devices were largely marketed to corporate clients and operated through AT&T WorldNet Service.

In 2002, ViewSonic announced their new 22.2-inch monitor with a WQUXGA resolution of 3840 x 2400.

In 2007, the company revealed a line of products at the Consumer Electronics Show that included video projectors, monitors and TVs that could connect directly to an iPod player for video playback.

The company had four lines of LCD monitors in 2011:

  1. the budget VA series;
  2. multimedia VG series;
  3. computer game VX series;
  4. and professional VP series.

The model name always has the size of the monitor’s diagonal at the end, with the series index Always placed before it.

At the Computex exhibition in Taipei on May 31, 2011, a new ViewPad 7x tablet computer was introduced that runs on the Android 2.2 operating system.

In 2012, the company decided to release an energy-saving monitor, the ViewSonic VX2460H-LED model. With a diagonal of 23.6 inches, this power efficient monitor is only 40 W, making it good for both you and the environment.

On December 6, 2022, the company introduced ColorPro VP16-OLED, its first portable OLED monitor.

ViewSonic has come a long way since its founding in 1987, and continues to innovate and offer solutions for the ever-growing demand of visualization tools.
